Imperative: Be constantly vigilant about your email box

Michel Fortin, on his superb blog, said it all today with the title: “Purging my way to freedom from email clutter.” But his entire post is still well worth the read:

Purge YOUR email box of newsletters that don’t consistently deliver GOOD content; hold those who’ve been given permission to interrupt you to a HIGH standard; and get yourself free, too. Purge without remorse.

    The inbox has become as closely guarded for some that it is harder to get than a social security number.

    Providing value, a la planet Perry, is a way to get past all of the clutter. I find it easier to be monitor a small amount of information because that way my brother and I can take action on what we read and learn not spend all of our time reading and coming up with ideas we never put into practice.

    After being on the Planet Perry list for some time I never have felt the need to unsubscribe although many others I have instantly as after the 12th e-mail in 11 days of “buy my stuff” provides little to no value.

    I unsubscribed from a whole bunch of newletters months ago – they were all promoting their buddies launches.

    Now I log on to 5-8 emails a day. Less distractions, more production on my part.

    And your newsletter, Perry is one of just 5 marketers I read.

    There’s plenty of quality there to keep me busy.

    I’ve always enjoyed your newsletter, Perry. But you’re quite right about this. I do have an interest in marketing, which has kept me reading your emails, but I’m a programmer who has not yet had occasion to put any of this knowledge to use. So for now, I bid your list adieu. Thanks for the great stories and information over the years.
