Want Free clips of my “Tsunami Seminar” this week?

The Maui seminar kicks off Monday morning March 1 and I’m flying to Hawaii as you read this.

Our seminar was ready to go, and then…. Chile had an earthquake and Hawaii was suddenly threatened with IMMINENT DESTRUCTION.

My SEO guy, Donovan Kover, narrowly escaped to safety on the side of a volcano. He waited with baited breath as the deadly waters poised to strike him dead.

Then….

This Twitter Tweet from @Mayerinated says it all:

“OMG Hawaii just swallowed by a 1 1/2 foot tsunami wave! OMG everyone panic now! Run for your lives! AAAAAAAHHHHH!!!”

I asked my team: “OK, so if I re-name my event “Perry Marshall’s Tsunami Seminar” is it going to sound anti-climactic?

Everybody replied, “Hey you might as well ride the publicity, uh, wave.”

I like it. It’s sorta tongue-in-cheek. It’s not about the size of the Tsunami. It’s about the fact that the media INVENTS a Tsunami every dang day, to freeze you into inaction.

You know they make their money by having you scared and hypnotized in front of the TV, right? Totally flaccid.

(You might want to remember that they didn’t murmur a single word about the Tsunami that DID kill 200,000 people… just sayin’…)

Well anyway, if you want daily updates – maybe several times a day – come back to this page. I’d also love your thoughts, comments and questions below.

Enjoy the Tsunami Seminar!

Oh, and by the way – you can get the seminar streamed to your computer, and on DVD and MP3. Sign up now and get the most advanced Pay Per Click seminar EVER in the history of marketing:

P.S.: This seminar’s gonna be awesome. It will NOT be anti-climactic. Post your questions & comments below.

I follow your comments very often and found valuable teaching and inspiring mindset in all of them, actually I´ve been very succedful in my country Chile, applying your Google Adwords course for my niche. Now, my challenge is to start implenting it to other markets in other countries, since it will be difficult for my niche in Chile. Thanks and keep up ypur good work.

    Dear Perry,

I know you think the Tweet from Mayerinated and the 1 1/2 foot tsunami was funny, but if you ever found yourself being dragged along by an ocean of water you couldn’t overcome you would not be laughing.

On December 26, 2004 over 225,000 innocent human beings lost their lives to a tsunami simply because they had no warning. Mr. Mayerinated was fortunate enough to be forewarned and now wants to make light of it because it wasn’t big enough for him?

I’m sure any one of those 225,000 who lost their lives in 2004 would happily trade places with Mr. Meyer today.

I dislike being a stick in the mud, but tsunamis are nothing to make light of. They are indiscriminate killers and we’re lucky enough to have the technology to protect ourselves from them.

Sometimes we have false warnings but if a tsunami did hit the shores of Hawaii without warning (as they have in the past) the loss of life would be substantial.

Oh my word, stop being a bunch of panzies. I live in Iowa. I’ve weathered tornados, floods, drought, fires and bad Government. You think Perry shouldn’t make light of those things because I might have a cow? ? Come on people. Everyone, no matter where they live, no matter what their income or social status has gone thru bad times. Do we have to tippy toe around all these disasters forever ?
Don’t FLOOD Perry with negative emails. Don’t BLOW things out of proportion. DRY up and get it together. Don’t get all HEATED UP over a newsletter.

Wow, Gene, I couldn’t agree more. I was really put off by this — this was truly a scary situation, and I couldn’t believe that Perry was treating it so dismissively.

And it turns out that the Tsunami caused by the Chilean Earthquake, while not causing a problem in Hawaii, caused horrific damage in Chile. I just saw the first article on this, “Tsunami sweeps away entire towns on Chilean coast”,
    http://tiny.cc/IKBQ6
The aritcle describes the devestation, in just one town
“Close to 80 percent of Talcahuano’s residents are homeless, with 10,000 homes uninhabitable and hundreds more destroyed, said Mayor Gaston Saavedra.”

Just wanted Gene to know he isn’t the only “stick in the mud”. I do agree with Perry that there is sometimes a pervasive use of scare tactics (by marketers, governmental authorities, etc). But this was a very real threat, and if only these Chilean towns that were destroyed had been fortunate enough to have the kind of early warning that Hawaii was able to get.

      Perry @ 12:53 pm

      David,

I fully understand how much damage was done in Chile. But Hawaii is 6700 miles from Chile.

        David R @ 1:16 pm

        Perry,

What has that to do with it? At the time, the Tsunami warning center issued their warning based on the best available data. I have a hard time understanding your making light of something that could have been so serious, and was such a serious event for those where the Tsunami did hit. I would agree with the other commenter that your post comes off as incredibly insensitive, and going for humor in light of a very serious and deadly event.

          Denise @ 10:07 am

          Hi David,
Its been my experience that Perry consistently and sincerely recognizes and in some cases, will even provide direct and personal support to tragic situations. Helping when he can and writing about what he feels to be unjust. He recently raised thousands of dollars for a family who lost their 13 year old to cancer.

Being a marketer AND having a sincere conscious for world issues, is really the truth about Perry–however, it is also true that the media tends to emphasize only the terrible, tragic and dramatic…causing fear to escalate into more fear, ignoring the balanced accounts that provide a more level and honest assessment of issues playing out on the world stage.

I get what you are saying..but please don’t jump to the incorrect assessment that Perry does not care about real life tragic situations
          that actually do occur.

            Denise,

I’ll take your word for Perry’s good works, etc. This wasn’t a comment on his overall character. But instead how this particular post really didn’t sit well given the devastation caused by the Chilean earthquake.

        Gene Benson @ 1:51 pm

        Perry,

I truly hope you’re kidding, but if not go to the Internet and look up: “how far can tsunami waves travel”. You’ll see that In 1960, tsunami waves generated by an earthquake in Chile reached as far as Japan, (that’s a few thousand miles beyong Hawaii) more than 16,800 km away in less than 24 hours, killing hundreds of people.

They’re killers Perry, no doubt about it.

        Perry,

I posted a message through your support desk commenting on the insensitivity of your post. I went through your support desk as I wasn’t sure whether it would be appropriate to post here, but it seems you’re happy to debate this openly.

In 1960 an earthquake in Chile caused a Tsunami that killed 63 people in Hawaii.

This is a very touchy subject. My suggestion would be to stick to what you’re clearly an expert in and leave the politics at the door.

    Jordan @ 11:32 am

Careful Perry, you’re treading on some sensitive turf.
NOAA really didn’t know what the Tsunami would do to Hawaii and even Russia, Alaska and Japan were on guard.
I totally understand what you are trying to accomplish with this post, but it’s perhaps a little insensitive to the folks that have been severely affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

    Jill @ 9:16 am

It’s ok Perry – I get what you were trying to say!

Others – You should know Perry enough by now to get his meaning! Got your attention, didn’t it? That’s what marketing is about… Think of some of the ‘shocking’ ads you have seen in your life. It’s all about engagement.

    • March 3

      David R. @ 2:28 pm

      Jill,

This seems an awfully low standard — where getting attention by any means is ok. I disagree, there is a line even marketers need to respect. And when you read something and wince, which I did at Perry’s cavalier remarks in the face of the real, ongoing tragedy in Chile, that is just wrong.

Amazes me how some people can pick a grain of salt and so easily throw it someone else’s eye. (Shame on you Haters)

Perry, I dont speak on behalf of all your loyal followers, but I think we understood your message. You were not poking fun at the loss of life, just making light of the situation in front of you.

    Enjoy Hawaii.

    Dan Bullock M.D. @ 3:43 pm

Hey, Lighten UP, You guys…If you knew Perry and could READ, you’d see that the comment is in NO WAY disparaging the seriousness of either natural disasters, this Chile earthquake, or the subsequent tsunami’s (big and small).

We ALL ache for Haiti, Chile, Southeast Asia, Darfur, etc. BUT unless we are productive (and getting even MORE productive) and caring enough to send HELP, what will all these poor people do?

It is, rather, a commentary on the inability of the media to SCALE their reporting to any reasonable level. As a famous person once said: “Just the FACTS, Ma’am” The media hype EVERYTHING to the MAX…and the result is “consumer fatigue” and as Perry said (a common theme of his) PARALYSIS.

The point as I read it is THIS: Everything Perry and his Maui Seminar teach is MEANINGLESS without ACTION by us. (A point I’m only now really appreciating fully, having delayed my web launch by 1.5 years since the Bobsled Run – to ‘Get it PERFECT.’

I only wish I could have afforded to go (even DIGITALLY), but my delay for perfect (and hidden fears) have placed my finances in jeopardy right now. (Dang Lizard Brain! Google “Seth Godin” + “Lizard Brain” for a GREAT video on fear, delay, etc.)

BTW, the February Mastermind is a good listen, and I claim Perry’s special “Prize” for the source of the comment “Does tend to EMERGE, doesn’t it”. Sounds to me like just the story of Ravi Zacharias with the Berkeley professor (a Buddhist) discussing “Either THIS, or THAT” at the dinner table. The Buddhist claiming “No absolutes of Right or Wrong” and Ravi demonstrating in a simple story that there really is a RIGHT way and a WRONG way. Therefore TRUTH IS discoverable.

Thanks for being concerned about the suffering people – Sri Lanka – and everywhere. We ALL are. And I would include Perry in that.

It is too bad NOAA can’t somehow gauge the intensity of the wave compression in the water to better project the size of the oncoming tsunami. (At sea, deep water, there is no “height” to the tsunami to see)

Sorry, don’t mean to seem preachy…or ‘know-it-all’…just cuttin’ Perry some slack. Hope you will too.

Bless you all, hope we get some GREAT tidbits from Maui here,

    Dan Bullock M.D.

He said stick by me and I’ll be your guiding hand.
But don’t ask me what I think of you.
I might not give you answers that you want me to.

    Oh well…” Peter Green
