When they put me in the box…
…make sure they also play this song, by the late Rich Mullins:
I believe in God the Father Almighty Maker of Heaven and Maker of Earth
And in Jesus Christ His only begotten Son, our Lord
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
Born of the virgin Mary
Suffered under Pontius Pilate
He was crucified and dead and buried
And I believe what I believe is what makes me what I am
I did not make it, no it is making me
It is the very truth of God and not the invention of any man
I believe that He who suffered was crucified, buried, and dead
He descended into hell and on the third day, rose again
He ascended into Heaven where He sits at God’s mighty right hand
I believe that He’s returning
To judge the quick and the dead of the sons of men
And I believe what I believe is what makes me what I am
I did not make it, no it is making me
It is the very truth of God and not the invention of any man
I believe it, I believe it
I believe it
I believe it, I believe it
I believe in God the Father
Almighty Maker of Heaven and Maker of Earth
And in Jesus Christ His only begotten Son, our Lord
I believe in the Holy Spirit
One Holy Church
The communion of Saints
The forgiveness of sin
I believe in the resurrection
I believe in a life that never ends
And I believe what I believe is what makes me what I am
I did not make it, no it is making me
I did not make it, no it is making me
I said I did not make it, no it is making me
It is the very truth of God and not the invention of any man
I believe it, I believe
I believe it, I believe
I believe it, I believe it
I believe it, I believe it
I believe it, I believe it
I believe it

thank you Perry, for taking the blessings you have received and using them to share the Gospel of Christ.
I appreciate you being open to share your faith. You have a right spirit. We will work some projects together soon, that will bless millions. I am not in a position to retain you yet, but will soon. Look forward to talking to you sometime soon. Bless you brother.
Hi! Perry,
Thanks for sharing this wonderful and inspiring song.
It has already blessed my Sarturday.
Keep on sharing the TRUTH which is the BLESSINGS!
Wish you and all here a wonderful weekend!
This is an shining example of the impact of faith and business. A strong path for the restoration of hope will be businesses that generate salvations, and sales leads, profits and prophecies, revival intertwined with creativity and innovation. Our culture as we are experiencing it is so full of cynicism that hope must be demonstrated as examples through the last place where people were paying attention, which was in many cases business.
1Ki_3:10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.
Thank you, Perry for sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others. That is what I wish more of us would do.
May God continue to bless you. He is our only hope in this world.
Great song and video!
Perry, what impresses me most about your Christian walk is that – unlike most Christians – you are not “stuck” on promoting one particular Christian denomination. For example, I have heard you talk about studying Catholic theologians of old, yet you are not Catholic. That’s practically unheard of (unfortunately). I guess what I’m trying to say is “Thank You” for all that you do and for truly sharing the love of Christ.
Blessings to you and your family.
Dr. George
Oh George, there is just so much to learn from different denominations and streams of Christianity. All of them have something to contribute.
First of all the Catholic church has a massive history of critical thinking about every issue you can imagine. I’m not sure there’s been an original idea in 500 years.
I grew up in a super conservative church that had Menonite roots. Then I went to Willow Creek, which is well known for creating the “seeker” movement. Now I go to a charismatic church. That combo is like getting 2 sex change operations in 20 years. Great mind expander.
Thanks for noticing.
Perry
Between the Ragamuffin Band and Phil Keaggy my mid-90′s college ‘coffee house’ phase wouldn’t have been complete. You ever listen to Phil Keaggy Perry? Guitar maven. Also a buddy of mine reminded me of Don Francisco the other day. Put a link to ‘He’s Alive’ on his FB page. Sent shivers down my spine just like it did while I heard it played in the Easter Cantata at church every year in the 80′s. Good stuff- thanks for sharing.
Phil Keaggy is great. If you ever get a chance to hear Neal Morse’s album “One” he does superb work and that album is epic. Don Francisco – just listened to that song this week. First time in years.
Hey Perry, thanks for being a witness and sharing the apostles creed with us. I was having an extremely stressful Saturday to this point, but was once again reminded that I should depend on the Lord when things seem to get out of hand.
I believe and I also believe God still heals today. Will you and others who believe pray for my wife’s healing? We’ve spent everything and been all over the country going to doctors, but they haven’t been able to help her. Her name is Kimberly. Thank you
Kelly,
Certainly will pray for your wife. I think you’ll be very interested in my article http://www.coffeehousetheology.com/miracles/

Oh My Word…I’m So Sorry To Learn of Your Wife’s Struggles With Health Problems–
May You & She Go In Safety Where You & She Need To Go…
May You & She Bear Up With The Grace & Courage of Christ–Whatever IT IS That You & She Are Asked To Bear…
May You & She Accept With The Grace & Peace of Christ–
Whatever IT IS That You & She Are Asked To Accept…
And May IT ALL BE 2U BOTH–Good News–NO MATTER WHAT…
Because Even What The World Calls “Bad News”…
USUALLY TURNS OUT TO BE–FOR THE BETTER…
(I’m thinking–Especially–of a shirttail relative whose Overall Health has done Nothing But Improve DRAMATICALLY Ever Since Her Oncologists Decided That There Was Nothing More That They Could Offer Her–And FINALLY Discontinued All Her Medications.)
Blessings ON You Both–Kelly & Kimberly.
Here is an example of Christ-like work…

And…
Of course—
There ARE Those Who See—PRIMARILY—A “Clever” Pepsi Commercial… *sigh* …AND Others Who DO SEE That There ARE Problems That Have NOT Bee Addressed…such as…What Happens On “Rainy Days”…Especially—A Little Further “Down The Road” When The Sealant Gets Old & Starts To Crack…?? My guess is that these “Solar Bottle Bulbs” will STILL prove themselves to be More “Blessing” Than “curse”—But I Won’t Ever REALLY Know Since I Do NOT Live With Them.
Christ—Himself—Miraculously TRANSFORMED Ordinary “Substances” IN & OF Life…He Did NOT “Demo” The Making of “Something” of “Nothing”…THAT JOB HAD ALREADY BEEN ACCOMPLISHED BY–His/Our FATHER.
Christ Taught & Modeled…
How We Are To Be Truly—Who—We Were Made To Be…
And THIS Teaching & Modeling WORK Was Done LARGELY During The Time Period of Christ’s Life That IS “The Gap” IN His Resume…As Told By The “Creed”…
Of Course—All Our Efforts—Including Christ’s—Must All Start…
Some Where…
With Some One(s)…
Doing Some Thing(s)…
AND I Don’t Care…
WHAT You Do—HOW You Do IT—or—WITH WHOM You Do IT…
EVERYBODY’S Work IS ALWAYS Subject To Charges of—cronyism & corruption & Failures To SOLVE EACH & EVERY Possible PROBLEM…
Which is probably why “The Stuff of Christ’s Life” That Happened Between His Birth & His Passion/Death Has Been Left Up To US All…To Learn & Reflect Upon…IN & BY Our Own Lives—Without Further Prejudice By The Holy Fathers of The Faith Who First Composed The Creed.
Thanks–Perry–For Introducing Me To These Prayers & Music…Truly Worthy of Being Counted Among ANYBODY’S “Parting Words”…
ANYWHO—

Hey Perry,
I like getting these messages in my email Inbox. Like a real letter from a friend. That’s what it’s all about isn’t it? Not just a fake “A Pile” attempt, but a real message from a real friend. So, Thank You.
I’ll share this story of my current “when you put me in the box” song to add to the conversation here:
A few months ago I was asked to choose a hymn and prepare our local Priesthood group to sing it in front of the entire congregation. The group as a whole is not exactly a musical bunch. In search of the right song, I came upon this story from General Curtis Guild, Jr., told in The Sunday School Times about how the hymn “How Firm a Foundation” was sung on a famous Christmas morning:
“The Seventh Army Corps was encamped on the hills above Havana, Cuba, on Christmas Eve of 1898—a beautiful tropical night. Suddenly a sentinel from the camp of the Forty-Ninth Iowa called, “Number Ten; Twelve O’Clock, and All’s Well!” It was Christmas morning.
Suddenly, a strong voice raised up the chorus. Slowly voices joined in until the whole regiment was singing. Then the Sixth Missouri added its voices, and the Fourth Virginia, and all the rest, ’til there, as General Guild said, on the long ridges above the great city whence Spanish tyranny once went forth to enslave the New World, a whole American army corps was singing:
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said—
Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?
In every condition in sickness, in health,
In poverty’s veil or abounding in wealth,
At home or abroad, on the land, or the sea,
As they days may demand, so thy succor shall be.
Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.
That soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I cannot, desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.
The Northern soldier knew the hymn as one he had learned beside his mother’s knee. To the Southern soldier it was that and something more—it was the favorite hymn of General Robert E. Lee, and was sung at that great commander’s funeral.
Protestant and Catholic, South and North, singing together on Christmas day in the morning—that’s an American army!”
—Amos Wells
The story struck me and I shared it with my Priesthood Brothers – Many of whom were dealing with employment problems, health problems, family problems, confidence problems, – problems that put small nicks in the heart of a Father trying to provide his family the life he feels they deserve. And ofcourse, the families sitting in front of us in the congregation shared this need for true healing.
We began to sing it – low volume and off key at first… but perhaps a bit like that regiment on Christmas Day in Cuba in 1898, the song took over the moment and soon a powerful chorus was ringing through the chapel.
I’ll never forget the feeling of being a part of it and certainly never forget the look on the faces of the wives and children in the audience as their husbands, sons, and brothers raised this song of pure testimony and devotion to our Lord and Savior.
When someone asks me how I know that Jesus lives and that He is the Savior of the World… I’ll tell you, in that moment, that’s as a sure as a man can know that God lives and loves us – because his Spirit was there healing every wound and changing every heart.
Here’s my favorite arrangement of it:

To anyone with a good set of computer speakers, turn this up loud and let it rip. Let the organ bring the thunder and truly experience the emotions of the dynamic range. It makes this grown man cry everytime.
Thanks Perry.

Nick,
Wow, what great sound. My friend just walked in the room and said “I love that music!” It’s why the Tabernacle choir is legendary.
You nailed it, email isn’t a fake “A Pile Attempt” it’s a note to a friend. I’m stealing that!!!
Perry
It is a rainy sunday morning in Amsterdam..what is so comforting is that Faith is not an educative process, Faith lives rich in our imagination!
Perry,
Great song by a great musician. Rich was the real deal! And I love the topic – I kinda wish more people would post what song they would want played when they get put in the box.
Your comment about – there is “much to learn from different denominations and streams of Christianity” so much reminds me of McLaren’s book A Generous Orthodoxy as well as Foster’s book Streams of Living Water. Your words are SO REFRESHING!!! These books breathed life back into my faith.
I could think of 20 songs to be played when I get put in the box. Higher on the list I would have
Matt Mahers’ Hold Us Together

and U2′s In The Name of Love
