Keyword Research on Facebook

At the first ever Adwords Elite Masters Summit in beautiful Maui, Drew Bischof and Bryan Todd presented their latest finding on Facebook advertising to a jam packed room.

In this video Drew reveals tips on how to do keyword research for Facebook. This is fundamentally different than keyword research for Adwords or for search engine optimization.

Make sure you are on our list to receive another video from the Maui Adwords Elite Summit to discover more tips and strategies for advertising on Facebook. If you haven’t already, go to IsFBForMe.com and take the self evaluation quiz – that will add you to our notification list.

I look forward to sending you more great content.

In the meantime, give me your thoughts below in the comment section.

Sincerely

This is every bit as good as I remember it being at Maui at the Advanced Adwords Bootcamp.

This takes demographic marketing to a whole new level, we implemented this immediately after Maui and had great success with getting awesome psychographic info about our customers…. very useful thanks for making this available Perry.

Wonder if there is a Program to do it for me?

    Jeff Alten @ 9:31 am

Hi Perry, I’ve always wanted to come to one of your events to learn some more about the kind of marketing you do and I might be “forced” to leave my industry! I’ve been an insurance & securities agent with a spotless record for over 25 years in the state of Ohio. But, from 2001 to 2004 I worked for a company, “American Family Pre-Paid Legal”, who recently, Nov. 09′, was adjudicated for the unauthorized practice of law from the Columbus Bar Association. They added all 23 of the sales reps as respondents and now it’s just getting worse. I won’t go into any more of the details but I’m being shaken-down by the ODI and feel like just hanging it up. Only problem with that is, at age 45, I don’t know anything else! BUT…there’s one service I’ve got exceptional knowledge of but I’m just not sure if it’s too niche. I’ll just give you my web-site although it hasn’t been updated in quite a while. The good thing is that I can service the enitre US although I’d like to create a strong local market (just used to the insurance mind-frame it guess). Okay, here it is: http://www.iraheaven.com If this is something you think would work on facebook or whatever else you think, I’d like your professional experienced opionion if you’d be so generous as to look it over for me. Sorry for the lenghty note…

    • August 1

      TC @ 8:16 pm

      Jeff:

Are you kidding? A website combining real estate purchases with an individual retirement account is “too niche?” Let’s see… there are only around 50 million Americans with an IRA and every one of these probably lives in a dwelling of some sort, many having made a personal investment in their dwelling. So, your prospective audience is huge.

Now, let’s say that just 1% of these might become rabid fans of yours. Do you think you could make a business of 500,000 prospective clients?

  9. June 22

    Gemma @ 9:35 am

Thanks for sharing this with us, but so far my experience is that for my business pay-per-click is expensive and I am very quickly outbid by big companies with big budgets.

I am certainly going to investigate Facebook, but I hold no hopes that it will be within my budget.

  10. June 22

    Serry J Winkler @ 9:49 am

    Lee Schwarz @ 10:09 am

This was a good, basic intro on doing keyword research on Facebook. Based on the statement that no one has an easier app (yet) I’m guessing that you’re going to announce you have one.

  13. June 22

    Daniel @ 10:25 am

What tools/sites do you recommend to determine the demographics and geographic area of a market? With 10 different targeting options, how many of these should I use in my campaign?

  14. June 22

    Clelland @ 10:32 am

Facebook is great to get a gazillion impressions in a day – literally in one state I have received over 100k impressions on the first day of the ad.

Ad copy that works in PPC does not seam to work there. And soon after you run your ad, it stops running because of low CTR’s. Then you have to increase your click cost to three times your original bid to continue to run your ad.

How the heck to you write ad copy on facebook that actually gets clicks?

I’ve tried my best ads in Google, copying ads I see a lot of in facebook, etc.

Maybe its just that health insurance does not work there…???

    Hey Perry,

Both my wife and I found the mining for keywords update quite informative. We have been implementing many of the techniques we learned watching your facebook ad video series.
We have been busy using the info for the niche we are building and have had some good tests. We hope to get at it again and the mining tip will benefit us greatly.
It is not my intention to self promote but I want to say that I am seriously looking for assistance at the moment. While things are set to take off with our monthly service, I find myself in foreclosure. With only days to go before the sheriff comes. While an online business can run regardless of whether I have a home, part of the appeal with my products & services is the green product aspect. I am working out of an earthship in Ontario Canada. I built this house with a crew, my wife and i have put everything we have into the place.
I have been working hard to learn online marketing, while also writing/recording music (the product). I wonder if you would have any time to look at my site, and offer any type of suggestion you might have.
Again I am so sure that my wife and I are going to start mining keywords to optimize our chances to reach our target audience.
    Peace
    Errol

Your right, to date this is the best way, but the only thing shown here was the door to that pathway. So, this is the right direction, but there is so much more that was not revealed here. It is possible to go many levels further with more exacting results.

  26. June 22

    Maddy @ 12:37 pm

When I create/edit an advert in Facebook, I don’t have the keyword field. I’m in the UK – does that make a difference? There is a ‘Likes and Interests’ field that operates in a similar way to the keyword field in your video (with a drop down list of suggested terms) but if I enter any of the suggestions, the number of people in the ads target group drops below 20 (from 16K+ without anything entered in this box).

Perry, thanks for that. The bit about adding in the additional letter to trigger more keywords has been really helpful.

Facebook ads have already helped me kick off a successful pre-launch of my coaching program. It was easier to find the correct demographic on facebook than find the money keywords on google.

The difference is thinking about the ‘who’ on FB rather than the ‘what’ on Google.

It seems like facebook does not like creative advertising. They will accept my ads if very boring and plain – really hurts CTR and frustrating. Other networks – including google take without issue. Kind of makes you wonder who is running the dept. I would love to know what they know or don’t know. My guess is it is some inexperienced college grad. corporate lackey with no business experience. I’d bet large on it.

    • June 24

      Perry @ 9:25 pm

The people approving the ads definitely have no business experience. But there’s lots of different kinds of creativity in ad writing.

It seems that in Australia there also is no keyword option to enter – but a likes and dislikes – and anything I enter there reduces the number of people to a very small group. I thnk this is possibly based on likes and interests in your profile?? anyway the first day of running my ad has been about the same price as my adwords campaign. so I am looking for more advice around reducing the cost.

    • June 25

      Perry @ 6:43 am

Yes, “keywords” are called likes and interests. You want to be very creative about looking for things that are in peoples’ profiles.

    Reagan @ 9:31 am

I’m interested in doing affiliate marketing through FB using the strategies you have mentioned, especially having a landing page within FB to connect with clients in a personal way and offering them some value before sending them outside FB to buy a product. Internet advertising is a new field for me and I have a lot of ideas and see a lot of possibility with FB, but I’m on the fence whether or not to spend the money on your fast track course. I’m very tempted, but I’m not sure if my ideas are developed enough to take part in a “fast track” course like this (i.e. I don’t have a website or a FB landing page set up yet). Will I be able to keep up with what is being taught if I can’t implement it all right away? Will I be able to come back and view the sessions as I get things set up? How long will I have access to these sessions? I guess I’m not sure if it would be worth it for someone like me who has not yet “set up shop.” Like I said, though, I’m tempted. Any thoughts to get me off the fence?

    • June 27

      Drew @ 9:58 am

      Reagan,

My next video (it’ll probably be released tonight) will directly address your situation. I’ll explain how you can start making money with Facebook without a website and I’ll show an example of someone who’s doing it. Listen for the reference to the Paypal buy button and the graphic.

As to your question of whether you’ll be able to keep up, I’ve designed my course to be step by step and able to be implemented quickly. You can keep up, all you have to do is do what I show you. You WILL be able to re-watch the sessions as we will be recording them and posting them in our members area. They’ll be available within 12-36 hours and you’ll have ongoing access to them.

Hope this helps. I’d love to have you in the program. You’ll learn a LOT!

I’m working with very small budget and willing to loose a little in the process of learning. In two days I’ve just about broken even. My question is, does anyone know someone who has some success as an affiliate using FB? If I could net $600 a week, I would consider that a success. Heck, I could make a down payment of a skimmer and move to Louisiana. Get me a piece of oily hope and change.

I love that trick of adding a letter. Knew there had to be a way of finding more keywords. Excellent!!! Thanks so much.

This is nice, I’m planning to run an ad campaign and hopefully I can test this out.

Seems facebook has changed “keywords” to “interests” – this seems to change what is shown on this video.

In Planet Perry, “keywords” and “interests” are interchangeable terms.

Thanks Perry. Our team has been advertising in Facebook for some time now, and it is BY FAR the best source of leads vs google adwords (but then again, I have yet to implement your technics on google ads). I have been able to obtain CPC as little as GBP0.02 and opt in rate of about 10% – which I know can be improved, becoz we did this without specialised knowledge whatsoever. However, the only thing which frustrated me is that the ads would take some time to get approved, and sometimes, may not even be approved (I had 6 rejected, out of 10 ads that I’ve tried to place) and they always give you the same reason, which is really not relevant.

    Hey, nice advice!

    Thanks!

Facebook PPC has many miracles in it and it is changing daily.

But I already got good leads from it.

I listened to the video and have no idea what he was talking about. I am a computer dummy and do not buy software for that reason. The language they speak makes no sense to me and I cannot follow the instructions. I need someone who will set up a program and I only have one or 2 things to change every so often. Don’t make it subjective. Make it one of those multiple choice things that even a dummy can follow.
My book is sold world wide as is my newsletter. My book is considered a classic by experts in the field. Novice traders love it because of its simplicity. The title tells the story, “If It Doesn’t Go Up, Don’t Buy It!”
    I need help.

Very good info to have when searhing interests on FB. Prior to this video it seemed that the interest choices that Fb gave you were a little sparse at times.

Thanks for sharing, I be testing this soon.

Very nice and helpful video but like some of the others Facebook produced only clicks for me. I also found their system not the best nor instructions.

I thank you for the work you are doing.

If I were to have it my way I would prefer a video showing the written word.

    Thanks,

I have a facebook fan page for my reptile business and feel that I have achieved some level of success in building my business brand. However, the facebook ads that I created hardly ever result in any serious level of clicks. I would like to learn more so as to maximize the full potential of facebook.

Great video and great info, as usual, Perry!

I love your emails- I actually look forward to reading them as opposed to all of the spam I get in my inbox. Keep up the great work.

Perry, I am absolutely thrilled by your online advise generator on http://www.isfbforme.com/. This kind of things make the internet so valuable: Detect patterns, automate processes and thereby create value for others.
This is exactly what Daniel Pink describes as the success formula in his book “A Whole New Mind”.
Now I can check out several of our projects and see whether or not we should get into FB.
Thanks from the Online Gitarrekurs Team!
