"No, David!" and the Conversation Inside a 4-Year-Old's Head

author_image-243913401 Cuyler is my oldest son.  Cuyler's favorite bedtime book is called "No, David!"

David is a little kid who's playing baseball in the house and smashes a vase. "NO, DAVID!"

David is running down the street and he forgot to put his pants on. "NO, DAVID!"

David is making stick people with various pieces of his dinner and his fork. "NO, DAVID!"

David smears the new carpet with big cakes of mud, from the front door all the way to his bedroom. "NO, DAVID!"

You may be guessing why Cuyler LOVES this book….

Cuyler's favorite part of the book is at the end when mama says, "David, come here!"

David comes and mama pulls him close and snuggles him: "I love you, David."  (Translation: "I love you, Cuyler.")

Cuyler loves "No David" because Cuyler IS David.  David's story is Cuyler's story.  The conversation inside Cuyler's head is, "I get so frustrated when everyone tells me NO!"

Some of my favorite Google ads that enter the conversation inside your head - or trigger that same conversation when you see them:

Your prospects have insecurities, desires and itches boiling just below the surface, waiting to bubble up.  When you flash those thoughts in front of their eyes, you can't help but get a response.

Whenever you write a Google ad, sales letter or landing page, imagine twisting yourself around 180 degrees…. instead of sitting in front of your computer, you're sitting in front of theirs.  Instead of selling your thing, you're imagining being them and buying something… anything…. that scratches their itch.

Talk to their inner 4-year old, the one who's always hearing "NO!" and give that little boy permission to say yes.  Be the mom who says the words he's been yearning to hear: "Come here…. 'cuz your mama loves you."
