In 2021 Karen Parker attended our very first Influence retreat in Chicago. One year later, she and her husband Aaron joined me and several other pilgrims in Ireland. 

We were staying in the hostel at the Great Blasket Island. It’s the westernmost inhabited place in Europe. The first morning on the Blasket, Karen was doing her Renaissance Time in the side room on the first floor. 

She says the most memorable part of the trip was watching, one by one, as members of our group woke up, ambled over to the front door, opened it, and gasped in astonishment at the gorgeous view splayed before them. “Oh WOW.” One after another, each witnessed the sun coming up over the mainland and shimmering across Blasket Sound, with rocks and islands and cliffs; birds and seals and the greenest green you’ve ever seen anywhere.

Later that day she said, “Perry, I’ve got an idea for you. You need to host the next Influence retreat at the Great Blasket instead of Chicago. I’ll be the first to sign up.” 

Many of the most influential writers of all time hail from the tiny country of Ireland, including Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, C.S. Lewis and Bono. There is something in the sea and the air that flows into their words and sets them on fire. It flows from every U2 anthem. 

Ireland is my “legal mistress.” Laura sends me across the pond to spend time on the Emerald Isle a couple of times each year. I’ve been in a love affair (very much like how you fall in love with a person) with the Great Blasket Island ever since my first visit there in 2014. She carries a magic like no other place. The Blaskets, Ireland’s crown jewels, have been the subject of some of its most famous writers including Seamus Heaney and Peig Sayers. 

The reason I return to Ireland so often is: 

Every time I go, I have a spiritual experience.

A memo… a breakthrough… an epiphany. Without fail. The Great Blasket Island is what I call a “thin place,” a place where the space between heaven and earth is thinner, more permeable. Where you can access the numinous “other” spaces. Where the mystical realm opens itself up to you.

My first experience of the thin place was one of the most revolutionary shifts in my life. Ever since that day in 2013, I have marked my life as “before” and “after.” It comes in just behind getting married, having children and starting my business. That’s because the moment I walked out on a cliff at Dunquin Pier (the spot where the ferry takes you to the Island) my connection to the Head Office went from DSL to Cable. 

At that time I felt as though I was bench pressing 1000 pounds. Everything seemed to be allayed against me. I walked out on that cliff and it was as though jet engines switched on. The Head Office spoke to me: “I’ve got you. I’ve got it. I’ve got that too.” 

The remainder of the week was the most intense I’d ever had in my life. Despite the meditative, “low RPM” pace of that trip, it was more intense than even the final week of Tom Hoobyar’s life, which I spent with him as he ebbed away in Intensive Care. 

I began doing Renaissance Time then. I haven’t missed a day in over 10 years. 

My dear friend the late Gerrie Hogg said: “When you look at the land, the land looks right back at you.” This land speaks to you, at times in an audible voice; but always silently to your soul and spirit. 

I got the inspiration for 30 Day Reboot on the Blasket; I got lost in the fog and shivered under a rock as well (due to my own over-optimism and carelessness) but despite nearly losing my life and gaining a new respect for Nature it still remains one of my most dearly loved places on earth.

Ireland transformed my very understanding of Nature itself. I am at my most creative, relaxed, comfortable and energetic in Ireland. My friends Jen Aldrich and Erin Kircher refer to it as “Irish Perry.” In Ireland, you get me at my absolute best.

Over the last ten years, I’ve taken
over 100 people to the Blasket

To a person, they attest: Yes, this is a very magical place. Even the Irish people who’ve traveled with me experienced their own country in a new way. 

This is why in 2024 I’m holding our Influence Retreat on the Island. 

Prior Influence Retreats, both in Chicago, rocked worlds for every participant. Destinies were born and reborn. Karen Parker knew that sharing this experience on this special island, with devices turned off, pen and notebook in hand, with wind and the waves and shimmering grass, will cultivate the mental and spiritual space that can shift atmospheres and tilt the world on its axis.

We meet June 7 at noon at the Dublin Airport, where we will transport you to Western Ireland. The trip runs 7 days, four days on the island and two additional days on the Dingle peninsula, which boasts some of the most astonishing views of any place I’ve ever been (46 countries and counting). If the Peninsula was in the United States, it would be on the cover of every Rand McNally road atlas. 

The accommodations on the islands are rustic and comfortable. There is no electricity (so don’t bring your laptop) but they have gas heat, running water, a fireplace and cozy beds. We have a talented chef on site to prepare meals. You will enjoy the comforts of civilization but without the distractions so you can experience the finest and clearest thinking of your entire life.

You will get a mind-bending deep dive on the difference between unhealthy movements and leaders (which are legion) and healthy (which are needles in haystacks.) The extended retreat (7 days instead of 3) with intimate small group time will afford rich discussion: Breakfast, lunch and dinner each day (meals prepared by one of my favorite chefs) with hiking, a tour of the Blasket islands in the North Atlantic, and long hours in the morning and afternoon to write, reflect, meditate and listen.

ITINERARY:

June 7: We gather everyone and leave from the Dublin Ireland airport at 12pm. Stay in Dingle, Ireland.

June 8-9: I take you around some of the most spectacular scenery (and secret meditation spots) in Western Ireland, including a pilgrimage on Mount Brandon.

June 10-11 (2 nights): Lodging on the Great Blasket Island, which is about 3 miles west of Dunmore Head, the most western point in Ireland. We go deep into your calling, your unction, of writing and influence.

June 12: Spend the earlier part of the day on the Great Blasket Island. Then return to Dingle and spend the night there.

June 13: Head back to Dublin and stay overnight.

June 14: Fly home.

Notes:

You can charge your phone, but I request that you only use it for taking pictures. I suggest you turn your messaging off. Don’t bring your laptop. You’re not copywriting and you’re sure not gonna be checking your emails. Bring a notebook instead. 

The island is steep and rocky and has high cliffs which are dangerous. The island has ticks, which aren’t a problem as long as you wear shoes and socks and pants when you hike. We will be staying in lodges and participants who do not come as a couple will likely get a roommate. You will get a warm comfortable bed all to yourself. You are responsible for air fare; all else is included in the fee. 

The island has cold water showers. You can take a warm shower every day; you just need to boil water on the stove first :^>. 

You’ll need to bring hiking boots and warm clothes. Temperatures in June are cool, ranging from 50 to 70 degrees F (10 to 20 degrees C).
