PS: This Idea Might Not be as Crazy as it Sounds…
According to Business Insider…
The average annual tuition for US public, four-year colleges for the 2021 to 2022 school year was $10,740 for in-state residents, and $27,560 for out-of-state residents, according to data from CollegeBoard.
On average, room and board costs added $11,950 per year during the 2021-2022 school year.
That’s over $23,000 PER YEAR for the average in-state education.
Nearly $100,000 for a 4-year degree.
I think the American higher education system is DEEPLY flawed and maybe even evil. Allowing 17-year olds to make hundred-thousand-dollar decisions that could potentially devastate their financial future is unconscionable. But the system is optimized to do exactly that.
Strap them with massive debt to pay for a degree that may not be worth the paper it’s printed on…
A degree in a field where few if any jobs exist?
A degree that in all likelihood teaches them NOTHING about how to earn MONEY with said degree?
A degree that teaches them something they could probably learn on YouTube?
Unless your child or grandchild KNOWS they want to be a scientist, doctor or engineer, I can’t imagine a US college degree being worth the time or effort. (In fact, Elon Musk, an engineer himself, says there is no reason to go to college these days.)
I won’t go that far.
