When I take my kids to the park we play this game: The kids perch themselves at the outer edge of the merry-go-round, then I spin them as fast as I can. Soon they’re spinning faster than my hand can push them.
Then I say…
“Everybody to the center!!!”
The little ones don’t know what’s coming next. They think they can just move to the middle, no problem.
But when they do, they find out…. as you move towards the center, the merry-go-round speeds up!
If that thing is doing 20 turns a minute when they’re sitting at the edge, “conservation of momentum” means it spins 100 times a minute when they’re all huddled in the center.
As they approach the center, an ENORMOUS force pulls them back. It would take superhuman strength for them just to reach the middle and hold hands.
“But it looks so simple!”
Looks can be deceiving.
Almost ALL entrepreneurs experience that same centrifugal force. It pulls us all AWAY from success.
Think of that 80/20 curve, how every single step towards the right side achieves exponentially greater results! But for some reason, the closer we get to that $1,000 an hour or $10,000 an hour work… and especially the closer we get to FINISHING something, where you can enjoy the fruits of your labor….
The demons inside your head start screaming and your inner head trash kicks in. Finishing that last 10% of your project is just like clawing your way to that center of the merry go round. That bugger decides to speed up and it pulls you away, away, away from the center.
Self-sabotage.
You’d THINK all you’d have to do is give people a step-by-step plan, A to Z, they’d follow it and we’d all get rich.
Nope.
Some folks spend their entire lives at the edge of that merry-go-round, never reaching that reward at the center. It is the most maddening thing.
I have observed this over and over and over and over for YEARS.
The only people who do NOT experience this are psychopaths. People who have no ‘brakes’, no conscience, no sense of responsibility about taking other peoples’ money. They are somehow immune from that centrifugal force. (Ain’t it great?)
What is going on here, anyway?
That is the subject of my email series “Dysfunctions, Addictions, and the Financial Burning Bus.” I *wish* there were a 5-minute solution to this problem. I have yet to see one. But I’ve gained a LOT LOT LOT of insight and seen a lot of people free themselves of those head demons.
Take a new journey with me and let’s find out how deep the rabbit hole goes:
