Why some succeed & others fail

How is it that two different people with identical tools, the same education and similar ambitions can turn out so differently?

One goes from zero to $10 million in 5 years.

Another’s still spinning his wheels.

WHY?

You’ve probably noticed that as you type a search into Google, the search results now change in real time as you type new words. This is called “Google Instant Search” and it’s been running for about a month now.

How does it affect your AdWords ads?

How does it affect SEO?

What results are YOU seeing?

Do your friends 'get' what you do?

I’ve always said, a good sign that you’ve chosen a good niche on the Internet is that your ‘regular’ friends don’t understand what you do. Yesterday my church pal Dave says, “You do something related to computers or the Internet, right? What is it that you do anyway?”

Smashing through the Black Wall of Fear

Marcus is eleven, and last summer I took him to father/son camp. Years ago Marcus’ younger sister Andria lived with us for three months as our foster daughter.

Marcus (a.k.a. “Tank”) became my buddy from the inner city and has been ever since.

So here we are with no electricity, no running water, 3 days on the Tahquamenon river and every day we do some daring activity like pole-climbing or the ropes course.

The ropes course is 25 feet above the ground and even though Marcus had a helmet, climbing gear and able assistants at every side, he was totally intimidated.

The first section was a sort of horizontal rope ladder that sorely tested his balance and stability. At long last he made it across. But then the next section was a tightrope walk on a single cable…. That’s when Marcus lost it.

He looked down at the ground far below and shook with terror. “I’m afraid of heights!” Just to put one foot on that cable and put his weight on it took all the will he could summon.

Last week one of my Roundtable Members, John Timur, said, “I hope the economy stays e-x-a-c-t-l-y the way it is right now. So my competitors stay glued to CNN believing all the negativity. Cuz MY business is up 37% this year!”

90% of your competitors are mediocre too. And here’s 3 things you’ll never see ’em do:

"When will Congress fix the economy?"

In London last week, I was talking to a hotel events manager. He said, “Normally August and September are a tad slow around here. But we’ve been booked solid for almost 2 months now, and I don’t know why!”

Our own sales here at Perry & company started picking up noticeably in mid-August. The US Commerce Department reported that home construction jumped 10.5% in August. My take: things are in fact headed in an upward direction.

Meanwhile with mid-term elections happening in Congress…

Imagination Trumps a Tough Economy

Imagine that a hot air balloon is stationed in the front yard of your home. You walk out the front door you step inside.

The pilot fires up the jets. The balloon rises into the air. You’re rising above your home, above the roof tops of your neighborhood, above your city. Soon you see the curve of the earth encircling you and a panorama of streets and buildings and land. The full expanse of whatever “territory” that you sell to.

My Email Anniversary

15 years ago today, on September 15, 1995, I opened my very first email account. Who’d have thought that in 2010 I’d send an email to tens of thousands of people in 50 countries and tell ’em all a crazy story? (And post this from Brussels, Belgium no less.) Congrats on being one of those lucky people :^>

Winston Churchill, the great Prime Minister who carried Britain through the darkest hours of the 2nd World War, said that. I visited his war bunker in London yesterday, having just finished my Marketing Evolution seminar which had met just 3 miles north. A fascinating tour.

Churchill was a successful statesman early in his career, then fell out of favor with the people. The Great Depression ensued and he nearly went bankrupt…
