2 next levelAt any given time, there are only three to four things you need to focus on to get your business to the next level. Three to four keywords in your present Google campaign. Three to four pages on your website. A couple of critical steps in your sales funnel. A couple of products. One or two critical salespeople. These are smart marketing ideas you should know.

It’s not that the other marketing ideas available out there don’t matter because they do. But they deserve the minority of your attention. Your job is to figure out what the main thing is and keep the main thing the main thing; the most important marketing ideas. You don’t “peel and stick” the six-word keyword phrase that gets 15 impressions a month; it would take four years to get meaningful numbers that way.

What is "80" and what is "20" for your business right now? Take my 2-minute quiz and I'll show you where you'll get the highest compound interest on your time and money!

  1. Perry, just 2 questions about 80/20. I read your book 2 years ago, but I don´t think that you wrote about this:
1/ What´s the relationship between 80/20 and the law of diminishing returns? In 80/20 it looks like the further you go to the right side of the curve, the easier it is to grow. But in the reality the further you go to the top, the more difficult it is and you get less and less results for the same effort.
2/ It´s true that you get 80% of results with 20% of effort, but in the most industries the most important is the last 1%, and who masters the last 1% will be the winner who takes it all. And it will take him 50% of the time to master the last 1%, after he learned 99% in the first 50% of time. Is this the difference between masters and wannabes, and not who mastered 80% in 20% of time?

    1. 1) Law of diminishing returns is totally 80/20. What’s the difference between a $5,000 stereo system and a $50,000 stereo system? To most people, the $50K system sounds 10% better. 10X more money, 10% improvement.

      2) Yes that’s true. You can learn enough in 24 hours to paint, play drums, play guitar or piano – you can get 10% under your belt in a day. 99.9% could take a lifetime.

      Great questions, John.
