Zoe’s first word in English was “Koala.” That was exactly three years ago at the Guanzhou zoo.
Today we took our new son (“ZJ” has stuck as his new name) to the Zoo, with Zoe and Uncle Bryan and the older kids. Zoos draw out children in a special way and the Guanzhou zoo is great.
When you get away from the everyday routine, you really notice things about people…even the people closest to you…that sometimes slipped past you when you’re at home.
When I got this message from Deb about her grandson, Max, I knew it was the right time to share it.
Not long after we got married, Laura and I were driving in the car. Someone on the radio was talking about adoption. Maybe it was foster care.
Laura said, “I want to do that.”
“You want to do WHAT?????”
We adopted Zoe three years ago, almost to the day. In fact we will arrive home this December 18 which is the same day we got home with Zoe in 2011. How time flies.
OK so how does adopting a kid *really* work?
At my most recent 4-Man Intensive, there was a guy who reminded me a lot of me…a go-getter entrepreneur with lots of hobbies, ministries, and side projects he’s passionate about.
He explained to me that if he pursues his outside passions too much, the other principals in his business, his family members, might see it as him shirking his responsibilities…they may even label it laziness.
So I told him a story about a space slingshot.
Most entrepreneurs are excellent at creating value for their customers. You know how to drive costs down, assemble a crack team, and apply 80/20 to their business and life. But are you yourself becoming valuable?
From what I’ve seen, the answer is “Very rarely”.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see a woman making a beeline for me. I’ve never seen her before.
She marches right up to me, sticks out her hand, and says “Hi, my name is Vivian, and the Lord gave me a word for you.”
